Starting this Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek with the sweeping panoramic flight to warm areas of South East Nepal and then overland to famous tea gardens of Ilam town, and then to Sukhetar at Taplejung where this adventure begins to Kanchenjunga base camps.

Walk leads through unspoiled remote villages on the mid hills with interesting culture through beautiful rhododendron forest to Kanchenjunga south base camp trek at Ramche.This was the first base camp and route where British Expeditions led by George Band climbed Kanchenjunga summit in 1955 AD.

After classic South Base Camp trek leads overpasses of Tamo and Mirgan-la heading towards the highland village of Sherpa and Bhotia people to reach at Lhonak and Pang-Pema at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, the highest spot of the adventure at 5,065 m.

Exploring both sides of Kanchenjunga base camp trek descends to lower altitude for the flight back to Kathmandu with last overnights at Sukhetar and Ilam town after fantastic time around Kanchenjunga base camp trekking and great guidance of View Nepal Treks.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Detail Itinerary

On reaching Kathmandu international airport, View Nepal guide / staff receives you for a short drive to respective hotels around Thamel area, a tourist hub of Kathmandu.

After getting refreshed our guide will brief regarding hotel, Kathmandu and Kanchenjunga base camp trekking with evening welcome dinner in an authentic Nepalese restaurant with culture programs.

Morning as per the flight time transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for scenic 45 minutes flight to Bhadrapur, low lands of Eastern Nepal from here drive to hill town at Ilam famous for teas and huge field of tea garden.

Starting the morning with a drive to Sukhetar around Taplejung area, from Sukhetar start trekking, as the walk begins following spread-out mid hills villages to Lali Kharka village at 2,260 meters with time for local hike and to observe local culture.

Morning begins with descend and then climb to a nice farm fields and terraces, this area mostly populated by Hindu Brahmins, Chettris and Kirat- Rai tribes.

Slowly walk reaches at Tembawa village, then downhill to Pokora village leading with a climb all the way at Kunjari village and to Khesewa-Bhanjyang village for overnight stop, with views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Yalungkang peaks.

Start the day with downhill to cross a stream, and then climb into forest to Lopoding village, from here with ups and down to Fun Fun, a small village offering views Khumbakarna Himalaya range with Yalung and Mt. Kanchenjunga.

From here climb for an hour to Pomppe Dhada with views of Mt. Jannu with downhill to Kheswa khola, after crossing a bridge reaching at Mamankhe village for overnight stop.

Morning begins with gentle climb, skirting around ridge with level path leading to Dekadin village. From here walk on the bank of Kabeli khola (stream) then climb of 300 meters high above river to reach a mountain path, then descend on stone steps to Kabeli khola to end the day at Yamphudin for overnight.

From Yamphudin village walk along Kabeli khola, crossing tributary stream of Omje khola and climb to Dhupi Bhangyang to reach a wide open grassland, from the top downhill through deciduous forest to Omje Khola, as the walk enters rhododendron forest, and to an exposed ridge to set our camp at Chitre, a small settlement with few huts.

Morning walk to Ramite Bhanjyang with steep climb into magnolias, rhododendron and bamboo forest to reach at Ramite, an isolated spot with small hut, from here climb towards Ramite Bhanjyang at 3,430 meters with amazing views of Mt. Jannu, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Khumbhakarna and Kabru peaks and then descend to Simbua Khola for overnight stop.

Start the morning walk following Simbua Khola along mountain flank of forested area, then reaching Wahta a lonely spot with a small hut, and then cross a small stream leading to a shrine in the middle of a forest, where there’s a large rock with an impression of serpent shaped, on leaving woodland area, back to riverbed with a climb to Tserem for overnight stop.

After a nice morning at Tserm morning starts with descend to Simbua Khola River, and then a climb to hill top reaching at Yalung Bara marking the end of tree lines with small stone built hut.

At Ramche for acclimatization with excursion to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp along the walk view of Yalung Glacier and Mt. Kanchenjunga South Peak.

After two hours of steady walk leads on classic and old route of first British Expeditions to Mt. Kanchenjunga climbed in 1955.

At South base camp enjoy great views of Talung and Kabru Peak, after a wonderful experience walk back to Ramche for overnight stop.

Morning walk back to Tserm, with a long descend into tree lines on the route to Tseram for overnight.

From here start with downhill to Yalungbar and then a short climb after crossing a river into forest leading uphill to reach at two small ponds, then up and down to crossing three passes of Mirgain La, Tamo La and Sinion La all in one day with super views of Kabru peak, Kanchenjunga with Mt. Makalu, Baruntse, and Chamlang peaks towards North West direction.

Descend to Tamo La at 4,500 m and from here another super views then reach overnight camp.

From onward to our last destination North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga, a pleasant walk with downhill into forest to Ghunsa River, from here a nice gentle trekl to Ghunsa village for overnight stop.
Ghunsa populated with Bhotia people of Tibetan origin, houses are built with stones this is a nice, neat small farm village.

Morning walk with steep climb overlooking waterfalls then on reaching grazing area of Yaks, after Ghunsa River, into nice rhododendron and pines woodland and then a climb to Rambuk Kharka with views of Khumbukarna and Janu Himal range, on leaving forest with tree lines entering dry and arid country with few vegetation of junipers and Burberrys bushes after Rambuk Kharka, uphill walk to overnight camp at Kangbachen overlooking Mt. Sharphu 7,070 meters and Mt. Janu North Face with Wedge peak.

After a pleasant morning with views, walk starts above the river for an hour and then heading towards North East, walk leads to glacial river and then a climb leading to rocks and moraine fed with glaciers, after Ramtang Kharka (a cattle herders place) leads to Kanchenjunga glacier, crossing Lhonak and Kanchenjunga glacier to reach Lhonak for overnight stop with views of Mera, Nepal Peak and Wedge Peaks.

From here adventure leads to our ultimate goal to Pang Pema, North Base Camp beneath massive Mt. Kanchenjunga, climb high above the river with super views of Kirat Chuli, Nepal Peak, Taple Sikhar, and Givegela Chuli, as the walk leads to highest point of this adventure at Pang Pema our last camps for two nights before heading back.

At Pang Pema full free day for hike to Pang Pema Peak at 5,800 meters for best views at the top offers views of Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna, Makalu, Cholotse, Sharpu, Drohma, Nepal Peak and range of other snow capped mountains.

After a grand fantastic time at Pang Peam and Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, morning walk leads to long downhill with few small climb, retracing the journey back on the same route to overnight camp at Kambachen.

From Kangbachen a long descend to Phole passing several farm area and small villages to cross Ghunsa Khola, and then walking into forest to an interesting Sherpa village at Phole for overnight stop.

Morning starts with downhill back into bamboo and rhododendron forest, just before Gybala village a steep climb and down again for two hours into dense forest and reaching open grassland area to a small Sherpa village of Amjilassa for overnight stop.

Heading back to warmer area on losing altitude to lower elevation into farm area and more villages, walk descend to open grassland of Ghaiya Bari and Sekathum villages, and then crossing Ghunsa and Simbhu rivers following Tamur River to Tapethok village for overnight camp, this village of Limbu (Subba) Kirat ethnic tribe people.

After Tapethok village, walk continues following Tamur River to Chiruwa village, and then through many farm villages, leading to a climb into cool forest, leaving behind the forested area walk gets pleasant on reaching Phoram village, a lovely moderate size village.

Today, the last and final walk of this adventure to Suketar village, trek leads to several remote rural villages and woodland, walk leads uphill for few hours and then downhill to Taplejung village at Suketar for last overnight around Kanchenjunga area.

Sukhetar has a small airstrip with flight to Biratnagar, but the fights are unpredictable due bad weather conditions or less passengers, so View Nepal Treks made this itinerary which is the best possible way, without the hassle of flight delay and cancellation.

After a great adventure to Kanchenjunga base camp our trip concludes with a drive to low area of Nepal South East at Bhadrapur before flight back to Kathmandu, drive leads past Ilam town to reach at best designated last overnight stops before Kathmandu.

After an overnights in Ilam, Fickal or Bhirtamod town, a short drive to Bhadrapur airport for the flight to Kathmandu with mountains views, on reaching Kathmandu transfer back to respective hotels with afternoon free for shopping or other individual activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting with moderate walks with up hills and rest along the walk, trek is pleasant but quite tough and challenging, as it involves climb uphill and steep descend with high altitude reaching at South and North base camps. From South base camp adventure starts over high passes of Tamo-la and Mirgain-Sinion-la crossing this above 4,000 m in a day. Where you might feel short of breathe, as the trek continues one will be acclimatized well on daily walk. We have rest day for acclimatization and with daily trekking helps you to acclimatize with slow rise in altitude gain. The only tough days are climb over passes, but taking slow walk everyone can enjoy this wonderful trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
Morning and night time are always cold above 2,500 meters with day time are sunny most of the season, spring and summer above 2,500 m 15°-18° C average and minimum of 0° to 5° C, autumn / winter day time 15°-16° C and can get below -10° C during morn / night time. We do not run this trek from mid November to March due to high chances of snow on the pass and.
As this is a adventurous to challenging trekking, you need to be physical fit with sound health, however after booking this trip one can do short exercise jogging and climbing up and down the steps, aerobic or Jumba exercise will be great exercise preparation for this trek. Kanchenjunga area of Tibetan Buddhist culture and Hindu religion, but high above from Gunsa dominated by Sherpa and Bhotias tribe of Buddhist culture, our guide will inform of the rules while entering holy sites with dress conducts.
As this trek starts with moderate grade of walking as altitude wise as the trek progress leading higher elevation of above 4,000 meters will be adventurous overcoming high altitude and thin air, if the trails are covered in deep snow including the pass we use the word grade as challenging which is an arduous job to find the safe path to respective destinations. If the pass is completely covered in deep snow we will consider and might re-route the trek to safe area for the welfare, safety of clients including staff and porters.
