The Adventure begins with a sweeping flight to warm Arun valley at Tumlingtar town, where this journey begins heading high hills through lovely remote villages of Chichella-Num-Seduwa and Tashi-gaon.

This trek leads to high Kongma-la and Tutu-la pass through beautiful alpine woodlands to Barun valley enclosed within mountains and then at Makalu base camp Trek  beneath the black rocky Mt. Makalu standing high at 8,486 m high.

After an enjoyable and exciting time back to Tumlingtar for the fight to Kathmandu with fond memories and wonderful time on Makalu Base Camp with an expert guidance of View Nepal Treks.

Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley – Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: Fly to Tumlingtar 950 m and camp.
Day 03: Drive to Num 1, 500m – 03 ride trek to Seduwa 1,493 m- 04 hrs.
Day 04: Trek to Tashi- gaon 2,200 m – 04 hours.
Day 05: Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500 m – 05 hours.
Day 06: Trek to Mumbuk 3,400 m – 06 hours.
Day 07: Trek to Nehe Kharka 3,750 m – 06 hours.
Day 08: Trek to Sherson 4,600 m – 06 hours.
Day 09: At Sherson rest day for hikes.

Makalu Base Camp and Barun Valley Trek Detail Itinerary

At Kathmandu international airport where you will be received by View Nepal Treks guides / staff for a short drive to respective hotels around Thamel area, a tourist hub of Kathmandu.

After rest and getting refreshed our guide will brief regarding hotel, Kathmandu and Makalu base camp & Barun Valley Trekking with evening welcome dinner in an authentic Nepalese restraint with culture programs.

Morning as per the flight time transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for 45 minutes flight to Tumlingtar, as the plane leads to Far East with views of snow capped mountains and Mt. Everest, Makalu & Mt. Kanchenjunga.

On reaching Tumlingtar meet our trekking staff and porters for this adventure to Makalu, overnight stop in Tumlingtar. Tumlingtar a fair size town located on sub-tropical climate on the shelf of
Arun River, from this town view of Mt. Makalu towards North.

To make this journey shorter taking an interesting jeep ride from Tumlingtar to Num village as the drive leads high up on mid hills through farm lands and villages, Khadbari the main town of Sankha Saba district and Makalu area.

Journey continues on rough road with up and downhill to reach at Num village, after hours of drive, at Num walk begins with a descend to Arun River after crossing a small bridge, a steep climb through farm villages of Runruma, and then another 2 hours of climb reaching at Seduwa village for overnight stop.

A short walk of half day on gradual winding path leads to Tahsi-gaon for lunch and overnight stop, passing farm fields and terraces till Tashi gaon, the last Sherpa village from here onward in complete wilderness except for few small settlements to cater the needs of trekkers.

From Tashi Gaon walk through thick forest of rhododendron, pines and oaks trees, passing few cattle herders huts. After a nice walk for an hour, then climb into forest all the way to Kohma danda ridge a small pass for overnight stop.

This place with overhanging rocks and caves which makes fine shelter for porters and local cattle herders, super views of Kanchenjunga and Mt. Makalu from this spot.

Morning walk leads to much exposed area passing glacial ponds Thulo Pokhari and Sano Pokhari, (Big & Small Pond) and then cross over Tutu-la pass at 4,075 meters with downhill into forest to Mumbuk for overnight.

From Mumbuk, walk downhill to Barun Valley one of the unique and scenic valley around Himalaya and undisturbed area, as trekkers seldom trek this route.

Barun valley famous for wildlife, herbs and rare species of plants and vegetation, from here walk leads to a slow climb heading North West to camp at Nehe Kharka on a grazing area.

After overnight in Barun Valley, surrounded by high mountains and rock cliffs, walk leads to our destination to camp at Sherson a close distance from Makalu base camp.

Morning walk follows Barun River upstream with beautiful views reaching at Sherson for overnight stop.

Sherson is the last main stop of the adventure with stunning views of Mt. Makalu, Baruntse, Peak 04 and rare East Face of Everest and Lhotse peaks.

After days of hard / tough walk, Sherson a great place for rest day, from here hike to actual Makalu base camp with views of Mt. Everest and its rare East Face “Khangsung” including Lhotse world 4th highest.

After a nice day scenic walk return back to Sherson for last night in this beautiful area.

From Sherson walk leads downhill to Yangre Kharka for overnight camp this will be the last stop around Barun valley.

Morning starts with a climb into forested area on leaving Barun valley to reach Mumbak for overnight stop overlooking views of Khumbukarna Himal.

After Mumbuk walk leads to a climb over Shipton -la 4,040 meters, Tutu-la pass, after twin passes reaching at Thulo and Sano Pokhari, and back to Kohma danda for overnight stop.

From Kohma a long descend to Tashigaon into thick forest after Tashigaon our route diverts to another large Sherpa village at Nawa-Gaon a large spread out village mostly populated with Sherpa tribe.

Today last walk of this adventure morning walk leads to a steep downhill to Arun River, after crossing a bridge, then climb back to Num village for last overnight stop on the high hills of Makalu area.

After a wonderful time in the mountains, morning after breakfast a jeep ride back to Tumlingtar, on reaching at Tumlingtar farewell dinner and celebration among staff, guide and porters.

As per the flight time board on small aircraft for a short flight to Kathmandu, on reaching Kathmandu transfer to respective hotels with rest of the afternoon free to relax after a great adventure to Makalu.

A free and leisure day in Kathmandu after an adventurous journey and tough trekking, on this day if interested book for sightseeing tour around places of interest in Kathmandu-Bhaktapur or Patan with rest of the day free for individual activities and shopping souvenirs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting with moderate walks with up hills and rest along the walk, trek is pleasant but quite tough as it involves climb uphill and steep descend with high altitude to reach at Barun valley and Makalu base camp, leads over high pass of Tutu –la and Shipto-la above 4,500 meters high where you might feel short of breathe, as the trek continues one will be acclimatized on this daily walk. We have rest day for acclimatization and with daily trekking helps you to acclimatize with slow rise in altitude gain. The only tough days are climb up to some passes, but taking slow walk everyone can enjoy this wonderful trek to Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley.
Morning and night time are always cold above 2,500 meters with day time are sunny most of the season, spring and summer above 2,500 m 15°-18° C average and minimum of 0° to 5° C, autumn / winter day time 15°-16° C and can get below -5° C during morn / night time. We do not run this trek from mid November to March due to high chances of snow on the pass and most of the lodges and guesthouses will be closed for winter vacation where local migrates to lower area of Nepal.
As this is a moderate with adventurous and as well challenging trek sometimes, one needs to be physical fit with sound health, however after booking this trip one can do short exercise jogging and climbing up and down the steps, aerobic or Jumba exercise will be great exercise preparation for this trek. Makalu area of strong Tibetan Buddhist culture and Hindu religion, where our guide will inform of the rules while entering holy sites with dress conducts.
As this trek starts with moderate grade of walking as altitude wise as the trek progress leading higher elevation of above 3,000 meters will be adventurous overcoming high altitude and thin air, if the trails are covered in deep snow including the pass we use the word grade as challenging which is an arduous job to find the safe path to respective destinations. If the pass is completely covered in deep snow we will consider and might re-route the trek to safe area for the welfare, safety of clients including staff and porters.
