Trip Overview

Island Peak Climbing stands at 6,189 m & 20,305 ft high with the native name “Imjatse peak” as it stands high in the middle of beautiful and vast Imjatse valley.

View Nepal Island Peak climbing a perfect combination of scenic trekking and visiting traditional Sherpa villages of Phakding-Monjo-Namche Bazaar-Thyangboche Monastery, Pangboche, Pheriche, and Dingboche.

Exploring world highest Mt. Everest base camp before Island Peak climb, this makes a better advantage on acclimatization well, as well getting used to high altitude terrain and climates.

This will be a great climb and adventure for beginners and hardy mountaineers before planning next major expeditions around Himalaya.

Island Peak climbing grade has taken from French and Swiss alpine grading system as PD + which means “Peu Difficile” of few technical difficulties trekking on glaciers this grading system used worldwide on the alpine climb.

Starting adventure to Island Peak climbing, with a short flight to Lukla, and then following mainstream trekking trail all the way to Everest base camp, from here towards Imjatse valley for the highlight “Island Peak climb”. After getting fully acclimatized and preparation climb the summit of Island Peak with the full support of View Nepal Treks expert guides.

Island Peak Climbing Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Day 03: Fly to Lukla 2,830 m & trek to Phakding 2,640 m – 04 hrs.

Day 04: Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m – 05 hrs.

Day 05: Rest day at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and excursion.

Island Peak Climbing Detail Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, received by View Nepal Treks staff with warm welcome and transfer to respective hotels with briefing regarding Island Peak climb and Everest trek, hotels, lodge on route with do and don’ts with welcome dinner.

View Nepal Treks reserves as free day preparation for the adventure to Island Peak climb where you can do last day shopping hiring and buying necessary gear required for the trip, with time one can book for half day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu-Bhaktapur and Patan city at places of interest

Mornings, flight to Lukla with views of mountain range, after 30 mins of great flight reaching Lukla, with short break trek towards Phakding village for overnight stop through farm villages, a moderate walk with few short ups overlooking beautiful scenery along the route to Phakding located by Dudh Kosi river.

After a nice morning, walk continues crossing bridges over Dudh Kosi River passing several interesting villages of Toc-Toc, Bhenkar and Monjo arriving at Sagarmatha National Park entrance gate, from here on the river bed for few hours and after the last bridge a steep uphill to Namche Bazaar, at Namche with facilities of good restaurant, pubs, cyber café, post office, and banks.

A perfect place for rest day for proper acclimatization before heading higher area, morning a short hike to Everest View Hotel or walk up on top a hill of Namche for views of Everest, Amadablam and adjoining peaks, visit the museum.

From Namche on gradual scenic path with downhill to Imjatse river at Phunge-Tenga for lunch, and then uphill through rhododendron, pines, firs tree forest with views of snowcapped peaks.
On reaching Thyangboche visit famous Buddhist monastery with magnificent panorama of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Kangtenga, Thamasarku, Kwande and majestic Amadablam.

After breakfast morning walk downhill into lovely rhododendron and pines forest, a nice trek and then over a bridge above Imja Khola. From here a gradual uphill to Pangboche village, last permanent village before Everest Base Camp and Island Peak climb. From here walking up at exposed area with views of Mt. Amadablam and then last up and downhill to Pheriche for overnight stop.

A necessary rest day at Pheriche for proper acclimatization before heading Everest base camp and to our goal Island Peak climb, as from here altitude gains more.

Pheriche with views Face of Amadablam North Face, a short high climb on the ridge provides views of world’s 5th highest Mt. Makalu and Amphu Labtsa peak including Island peak.

After rest at Pehriche, morning walk on flat valley then with short climb for an hour to Thugla for lunch where Khumbu glacier melts into a raging river. At Thugla trail from Dingboche and Pheriche joins.
After a lunch stop a steep climb for an hour to Thulga pass, here witness memorials of unfortunate climbers who died climbing Mt. Everest, Lhotse and other high mountains. From here a nice pleasant walk brings to Lobuche for overnight stop.

Morning walk to Everest Base Camp with few hours on nice gradual path and then leading to a short steep climb in between glacier and moraine to reach at Gorakshep, beneath Mt. Pumori and Kalapathar.
From here continue walk towards Everest Base Camp, at base camp enjoy the views of notorious Khumbu Ice Fall and glaciers, after enjoyable time back to Goarkshep for overnight halt.

Starting early to reach highest point on trekking leading with steep climb for few hours to the top of Kalapatthar, a black rocky ridge at 5,545 meters high, enjoy panorama of surrounding peaks with Mt. Everest at close distance.
From here on the same trail for an hour then the route diverts towards Imjatse valley for overnight stop at Chukung the last settlement of Khumbu and Imjatse area.

After Chukung walk to Imjatse valley at Parsya Gyab and Island Peak Base Camp, leading to a steep climb towards south on moraine left bank of Lhotse glacier, following glacial streams to the snout of Imja glacier crossing a dry lake between Lhotse and Imja glaciers to reach at base camp around Pareshaya Gyab, afternoon free to relax and acclimatization.

A necessary rest day for acclimatization and preparation, check the gear before the climb of Island peak.

Climb to Island Peak can be done from base camp, but it is always safe and best to add an extra camp to make the climb more accessible.
View Nepal for your safety and success will set High Camp this will make it more approachable to reach the summit of Island Peak. At high camp with free afternoon our guides will check and scout the route for next day climb, might fix ropes where necessary for the safe climb.

After final preparations, start the adventure for the Big Day! before dawn as the climb leads across a broad open gully, and following snow-covered glacier above, avoiding serac and crevasses climbing northwards over snow covered scree in the margin in between a glacier and base of the main top ridge.
Then climb leads to cross a gully with some stone and icefall danger, a steep snow and ice ramp leads upwards for nearly 100 meters (300ft) to the top of the summit, on reaching the top with high spirit and triumph overlooking panorama of world’s highest mountains Mt. Everest 8,848 m, Lhotse 8,501 m, Mt. Amadablam 6,856 m, Mt. Makalu 8, 463 m, Chamlang and Baruntse peaks in the far distance, after an experience of a life time descend on the same route towards base camp.

View Nepal Treks for your success and enjoyable adventure climb, reserves an extra day as contingency, in situation like bad and unfavorable weather or adjusting this day to maintain the itinerary days taking care of client’s fitness as well on this high altitude adventure.
If this day not used and all goes well according to our standard itinerary our guide / leader will use this extra day on return trek to Lukla, making some short day as you enjoy the walks with views on route.

After a great experience on Island peak climb, return journey to Lukla walking downhill with few uphill’s over moraine, then reaching at Chukhung, after a short rest, continue walk to Dingboche for overnight in the comfort of nice cozy lodge with mountain vista.
Dingboche a temporary settlement located near Pheriche with about 20 lodges and grand views of Taboche, Cholatse, Ama-Dablam and as far to Mt. Makalu.

Return journey is much easier losing heights every hours, walking downhill with few short ups to Pangboche and then to the bridge with two 2 hours climb to Thyangboche for overnight stop.

After a great time descend to Imjatse River, with steep climb for an hour to Sanasa, from here on gradual path with short ups and downs to Namche Bazaar, a break here and then walk back to Dudh Kosi river valley and to Monjo for overnight stop.

Morning walk reaching at Phakding from here retrace the journey back to Lukla with last climb, on reaching Lukla celebrate last night dinner with fellow trekkers and staff.

From Lukla taking an early morning flight back to Kathmandu with views of mountains, at Kathmandu domestic airport our staff transfers you back to respective hotels with rest of the day free at leisure.

A spare day in Kathmandu in case of flight delay and cancellation due to unfavorable bad weather which might occur, as the Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes if all goes well have a free day or sightseeing tour of Kathmandu-Patan and Bhaktapur.

Today, your last day in amazing Nepal with great experience and fond memories of Island Peak Climb and trekking, as per your time for international flight, View Nepal staff transfer you to airport for your final departure homeward bound or to your next destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending upon the season of trekking and climb, but in mountains nearly all seasons are cold, however autumn and winter months can get very cold above 3,000 meters especially morning and night time but the day is pleasant with sunny days most of the season. Other season beside monsoon / wet months is pleasant with occasional thunder showers during late afternoon.
As you will be trekking on mainstream trekking trails, the lodges are nice and cozy from Lukla onwards, but after Chukung, where View Nepal Treks provides excellent camping facilities of two men tents, dining tent, toilet tents with separate kitchen unit of cook-kitchen staffs. Foods are as per our camping and lodge menu on route, with Nepali set meals of Dal Bhat, Noodles (soup or fired) continental / Chinese to Mexican and Italian with Indian verities. It is better to stick with vegetarian food while on trek meats are not healthy due to hygiene. Higher above 4,000 m food menu are limited due to remoteness and high terrain climate conditions.
